The popular cyberpunk, dystopian future Netflix TV series is getting the tabletop treatment thanks to Hunters Entertainment and fans of the show can invest in the game via Kickstarter.
On Monday, Hunters Entertainment announced their Kickstarter for the game was live. In less than two hours, it had already made its goal of $20,000.
Hunters CMO and co-founder Ivan Van Norman tweeted the following on Monday morning.
According to the official website, Altered Carbon is a “transhumanist vision of the future, the human mind is nothing more than digital code – Digital Human Freight – saved and stored in a Cortical Stack, advanced technology that allows you to “re-sleeve” your entire consciousness into a new body.”
This allows players a sort of “immortality” in the game from a mechanics standpoint. Characters simply don’t “die,” they transfer their consciousness into another body.
“Whereas character death is a natural occurrence and ever-present threat in tabletop RPGs, Altered Carbon: The Role Playing Game offers a unique angle on the concept,” the official website said. “Mind you, immortality is not invincibility. Losing a Sleeve is a life-altering setback, and “Real Death” awaits anyone whose Stack is destroyed.”
The game promises the same action, mystery and intrigue as the series, wrapped up in a “gritty sci-fi action noir.” The core rule book is a 256-page, hardcover offering that contains special sections for players and game masters, customizable character archetypes, equipment and sleeves.
Items included in stretch goals include a handcrafted wooden GM screen with magnetic accessories, Illuminum dice that glow under UV light and a Hello Unicorn carrying case. More information on stretch goal items can be found on the official Kickstarter page.
